Riot Breaks Out @ Ford City Mall This Afternoon

Good evening, everyone. As I'm sure many of you are aware by now, there was a scary situation, a riot to be exact, that broke out at Ford City Mall on Chicago's Southwest side (south of Midway Airport) this afternoon around 4:45pm. It lasted for about two hours from what I'm getting. It started out as a group fighting in the Mall near the Carson's as a celebrity from an autograph signing left the Mall. Initially, the situation was getting ugly in the first few minutes of it being called in, and then it calmed down for several minutes before all hell broke loose. I don't really want to describe everything that happened right here, so I'm just going to give all of you the particulars via off the 911 tapes that I've grabbed from Zone 6, the 8th District (the home Zone and District for Ford City). I started listening at the 4:18pm mark and will continue to listen until I hear that everything was cleared up. If anyone has any comments or questions, please feel free to leave them here or email me at either avondalelscrimeblotter@gmail.com or at my personal email address, weatherboy58@hotmail.com. I hope all of you are informed by this post and will see just what happened today at Ford City. Without further ado, here's all of the calls and radio activity.

4:44pm - Battery in progress. Ford City Mall. By the Carson's. Six people fighting (I think this is the call that leads up to everything). Beat 803Adam is being assigned to this.

4:45pm - Beat 6713 is on scene at Ford City and says that he's getting reports of up to 30 girls fighting near the Carson's. He's got three Tac cars and two Beat cars on scene and is also working with six security guards to tame the fight. There's a nice-sized crowd on both sides of the Mall though.

4:46pm - 6713 is saying that there's 200 kids in the mall fighting now. Security is getting multiple reports of large fights, and they're now requesting additional CPD units on scene. 8th District supervisor is needed to go over also. Beat cars 832 and 833 are going, as well as Beat 830.

4:47pm - 1) Shots Fired. Ford City Mall. 2) Beat 862 is in the Food Court of the Mall and says he doesn't see anything going on. 3) 6713 is shutting  down the Food Court.

4:48pm - 6713 is advising units not to get hurt coming over. No one's fighting right now and they just want to get these kids out of there. They're all headed towards the bus stop. All of this is from a celebrity who came to the Mall for an autograph signing who just left.

4:49pm - Security is closing the entire Mall. They want EVERYONE gone.

4:51pm - 862 wants officers to meet him in the middle of the Food Court.

4:53pm - Sounds like everything's calming down at Ford City, at least for now. I'll keep an eye on the situation. Beat 6710 and his team are now also responding.

4:54pm - 830 is asking Dispatch to call CTA to see if they can send over some more buses to get all of these kids out of the area. Probably the Cicero and 79th Street buses are going to be needed.

4:56pm - A supervisor is gathering three or four units to sit outside of the Mall for a half hour to make sure everyone gets out of the Mall.

4:57pm - Uh oh. We've got a HUGE mob of 500 people now running through the Food Court. More help might be needed.

4:59pm - Beat 863Boy has one in custody for battery. Uniformed officers are needed to come take over the arrest. Beat 846 is saying to bring the person over to them by the door.

5:00pm - 1) Person w/ a gun. Ford City. In the store inside Spring, across from Rainbow, a female caller says that they have guns. 2) 6710 wants his officers to combine with 862's officers to push everyone out of the Mall via the JcPenny's exit.

5:03pm - 1) Beat 799 wants his late rapid Wagon and another car to head over to Ford City to help the 8th District out. Beat 741, the Wagon, and Beat 742 is going as well. 2) Several calls of "person w/ a gun" are being called in throughout the Mall. No descriptions or particulars on any of the calls, though.

5:05pm - 863B says that 21 kids just ran back into the mall through the JcPenny's. Another officer is advising them to deploy tear gas.

5:07pm - 1) Dispatch just got the phone with CTA about 830's request and they said they'll try to send some more buses over. 2) 6710, 862 and 863 and a couple of other Beat officers have formed a line of officers and are going to push everyone out.

5:08pm - 830 needs a car over at 76th and Cicero to do some traffic control to get all of these buses and cars out of the area. He's also Dispatch to call Burbank to see if they can send some of their cars over to assist with traffic.

5:12pm - Backlog in 8 at 17:12 hours. Almost all units in 8 are at Ford City.

5:15pm - An officer is advising that several mobs of kids are running towards the Best Buy in the Mall complex and might start looting. Sounds like a Burbank officer called this in. Uh oh....

5:18pm - There's a call about all of these kids being by the Old Country Buffet now, and they're fighting.

5:19pm - Large mob of kids fighting in the middle of the intersection at Cicero and 75th.

5:20pm - 1) We still have a large group of kids near the entrance of  JcPenny's. 2) Several calls of kids running from the Old County Buffet to Cicero Ave. 3) Calls of kids jumping on cars near Best Buy.

5:21pm - Just got a call of the kids ransacking the Best Buy over on Burbank's side. They're now crossing back over Cicero and heading back to Ford City.

5:22pm - 6713 is saying that there are NOT enough officers to handle this situation, so he's asking Dispatch to bare with him and the rest of the officers. More officers from the rest of the City might be needed.

5:23pm - 1) 830 wants all CTA buses that drop people off at Ford City to be rerouted from there. He wants no CTA buses coming to Ford City at all. Instead, all buses should come to take the kids back east and north along Cicero and 79th, respectively. 2) 6710 wants all available units to meet him at ProVision to get situated and handle this situation. He wants all officers to stay in large groups because there's 500 to 600 kids running around. 3) 799 is advising Dispatch to send ALL of his rapids to Ford City.

5:25pm - 1) 6713 wants Beat cars 813 and 815 to get all of the traffic from Ford City to get out of there, officers shouldn't worry about traffic being backed up on Cicero for now. Actually, traffic on Cicero needs to be stopped. 2) Beat 805 is being advised to head over to Ford City to help with traffic. 3) 6713 is saying that there's a THOUSAND kids near the Wendy's.

5:26pm - 1) 830 is saying that more officers from Central Deployment might be needed. 2) All of the units that are meeting 6710 are being advised to activate ALL of their emergency equipment and start making a line to skirmish the kids out of there.

5:27pm - 813 has a group of 500 kids running across Cicero. He's by himself, too. Beat car 814 is coming to help him.

5:28pm - 6713 wants ALL traffic on Cicero shut down. 79th for the northbound, 71st for the southbound. Also, just FYI, but the ONLY cars left in the 8th District are Beat cars 811, 812 and 825. That's it. No other cars are available for other 911 calls on that side of town. So just know that if you live anywhere on the South side between 35th and 95th, west of the Dan Ryan, you probably won't be getting CPD service for a while.

5:30pm - 1) Battery in progress. Ford City. By the Firestone. 100 kids fighting with bats. 2) 6713 wants rapids from the 9th and 22nd Districts to come assist with this situation. The helicopter is also needed. Dispatch and her supervisor are on top of it.

5:31pm - Sounds like the Firestone crowd's been dispersed.

5:32pm - Beat 800, 8th District Commander, wants ALL available bodies in 8 to go to Ford City NOW. Also, he's asking Dispatch to contact the nearby suburbs of Bedford Park, Oak Lawn and etc. to get some additional manpower.

5:33pm - Beat 806 wants the CTA supervisor on scene to meet him ASAP. The biggest problem we've got right now is all of these kids waiting to leave the area on CTA.

5:34pm - Beats 820, 841, 843, 853 and 873, along with Beat car 825, are now all heading to Ford City.

5:35pm - 1) 10th District rapids are also being deployed to the scene. 2) Oak Lawn Police are requesting help at Best Buy.

5:36pm - Multiple officers are saying that CTA needs to get buses to Ford City immediately to get everyone out of there.

5:37pm - 814 says things are calming down at Best Buy. Other officers are reporting that things are also calming down at Firestone and ProVision as well.

5:38pm - CTA is going to be sending over empty buses now to get these kids out. This is per Dispatch's supervisor.

5:40pm - Male Black with a red hoodie just took off from an officer at 79th and Cicero, near the Dunkin' Donuts. He's holding his side. Heading towards the Lowe's. Beat 6293 is in pursuit.

5:41pm - Okay, the guy's in custody. 6293 has it under control. A slow down is being given.

5:42pm - Beat car 714 is at Ford City now.

5:43pm - 1) Battery report. Ford City. Security officer was involved in a flash mob fight. 2) EMS run. Ford City. CTA bus operator got glass in their eye. The ambulance responding

5:47pm - 830 wants officers to start grabbing kids to make an example over at Firestone. Wagon is needed.

5:48pm - Beat 820 is now saying that the crowd from Firestone is now running into the residential area just south of there. Oh boy...

5:49pm - 820 has about 100 kids in the Firestone lot, southeast. They're moving into the residential area. Officers are needed to go into the neighborhood to patrol the streets and make sure things don't get out of hand there.

5:51pm - 1) Beat 840 is making a suggestion and says that all of the traffic should be routed north and south onto Cicero. 2) Beat 843 is advising that the crowd by Firestone is going back into the Mall complex, leaving the residential area they were in.

5:52pm - 1) The kids need to be pushed towards the buses over by Wendy's. 2) Eight CTA buses just left the Mall and one more's coming now. 3) Information for the CPD. Ford City Mall. Pace buses need to come pick up their passengers as well.

5:53pm - 853 needs some more help with traffic over at 71st and Cicero. One officer's saying that they're blocking off traffic at Cicero and 67th, and Dispatch is sending 741 to help out with that post. Indirectly, that'll make things better for 853 at 71st/Cicero.

5:54pm - More buses are pulling into Ford City now.

5:56pm - Some of the crowds are moving towards the AMC Theater while the others are moving towards the bus stop at Carson's. That is where all of these people need to be moved to.

5:58pm - The crowds need to be pushed west from the Theater and Carson's to the bus stop. A couple of units are needed to do this.

5:59pm - Officers are being advised to just grab these kids that are running back and forth, and take them into custody. They're getting real fed up with this. Some of these kids don't want to go to the bus stop so they need to be taken into the wagons.

6:00pm - Emphasis on moving these crowds towards the buses is being stressed once again.

6:01pm - A supervisor is advising officers to stop corralling these kids and just parallel them towards the buses. If they keep corralling the kids, they'll just keep running.

6:02pm - Someone's giving the order to get these kids on the buses and get them the hell out of there.

6:03pm - A female officer has a large crowd of 30 to 40 by the Theater and I-Hop waiting on the bus and another officer says to bring the empty bus in sight over to that crowd.

6:04pm - 6713 has that empty bus by the Theater and I-Hop, and the CTA supervisor's saying that that's where the CTA bus operator was injured. A second bus is supposed to be coming but the supervisor has no idea when it'll be there.

6:05pm - ALL traffic on Cicero can be opened up once again. They're just trying to get the buses out of the Mall now, all other traffic from the Mall is gone now.

6:06pm - Beat 6791 is letting Dispatch to let the 4th and 6th Districts, Zone 8, know about all of these buses coming down 79th with all of these kids on them.

6:09pm - Police Helicopter #1 just did a sweep of the entire area and didn't see any large crowds besides the one waiting for that bus by the Theater and the I-Hop. The entire south side of the Mall complex is cleared.

6:10pm - 840 wants all 8th District units that aren't doing anything to be released back into the District.

6:11pm - 6713 is releasing all 7th, 9th and 22nd District units from the scene now. They'll release the 8th District ones after.

6:13pm - Beat 41Sam30 wants to speak to a CTA supervisor NOW. He's still got this large group of now 75 kids waiting to leave by the Theater.

6:14pm - Two additional buses are now en route. However, there's still another 75 kids waiting by Carson's for the bus. That crowd is peaceful though. 41S30's is not so peaceful. Oh boy.

6:16pm - 6710 is advising two units to follow the bus that's leaving now through the District to make sure nothing gets out of hand.

6:17pm - Westbound traffic at 76th and Pulaski needs to be blocked off for now.

6:18pm - Another big fight might be starting up again, this time over at Pulaski and 79th. A window on a CTA bus was just kicked out over there. The bus is standing still.

6:19pm - The bus that's leaving the Theater now is going only to the Red Line on 79th, then it'll drop all of the kids off there.

6:22pm - Police Helicopter #1 is being released from this incident.

6:24pm - We've got a parent trying to pick up their kid over at the Theater per 806. Another supervisor is advising that they can send that parent through to pick up the child. Parent will be in a green Jeep.

6:26pm - 899 wants a supervisor to go over to Pulaski/79th for that CTA bus. 834 is doing the paper and 830 is now headed over.

6:31pm - 1) Beat 5165 has a bus full of people at 76th and Cicero. He wants to know if he should have the driver pull into the Mall to pick up more people or just send it down Cicero. A supervisor is telling him to just send the bus down Cicero. 2) 820 has another bus pulling up to I-Hop now. It's empty.

6:34pm - The injured bus driver is at Holy Cross. 830 is going over with 834 to do the report.

6:35pm - 823 is at the I-Hop and is asking Dispatch to get another CTA bus to come over and pick up some more people. The crowd that's there now is getting a little upset. 6713 says that there are additional buses coming, but they're coming from all over the City.

6:36pm - 806 is advising that this situation will be over as soon as all of these kids are loaded onto the buses and are shipped out. Also, a parent pick-up site is being set up east of the I-Hop.

6:39pm - 41S30 has the first bus leaving now heading north on Cicero, and the second one will head down 79th. Cars will be following the buses. Other than these kids waiting to leave, there's only a few stragglers around and the situation is pretty much all under control.

6:41pm - 840 is trying to get a count of how many arrests have been made. So far, seven have been arrested. 803A has one, 863B has one and 872 has four female juveniles.

6:46pm - CTA bus #6402 has the second last load of people from Carson's, headed down 79th. One more bus is needed, east of I-Hop.

6:49pm - All outside units are being released. This is strictly being handled by the 8th District now.

6:52pm - The last bus is on scene, taking the rest of the people now. Whew. Sounds like this is pretty much over.

6:54pm - After this bus is loaded, service will return to normal. Also, 840 says that all units in 8 should be clear now except for the officers who are handling the arrests and 830 and 834 who are at the hospital.

6:55pm - An RD number is now being pulled from Ford City. It's HW167833. I think they're just using this one RD for all of the arrests. The event number for all of this is 10311.

6:56pm - Okay, this situation is officially over. 899 is telling all of the officers that they did a good job. With that, I'm out. Have a good night, everyone.
