Homicide On Luna On Wednesday Night

Good evening, everyone. A gang-related shooting, which resulted in a 7 year old girl named Heaven Sutton being killed, occurred on the 1700 block of North Luna Avenue on Wednesday night, in Chicago's Austin neighborhood on Chicago's West Side. The homicide occurred at about 10:45pm.

At 10:43pm, 25th District officers reported hearing several "loud reports" just a couple blocks south of the 25th District station, which is at Grand and Central. A Sergeant, who was at Central and North Ave., also heard the "loud reports" and said they sounded like they were coming from Bloomingdale and Central. A minute later, at 10:44pm, 911 received a couple of calls of a "Person Shot" at 5550 W. Bloomingdale, which would be just east of Central. At the same time, a call of "Shots Fired" rolled in for 1709 N. Luna, the same block where the homicide occurred.

Officers arrived at the Bloomingdale address at 10:45pm to find an unnamed 19 year old man shot in the lower leg. He was in good condition and was taken to West Suburban Hospital. However, Heaven wasn't so lucky. At the same time, at 10:45pm, a few more calls came in on the 1700 block of N. Luna, including a "Person Shot" call at 1728 on Luna with a 7 year old girl being shot in the back. That 7 year old girl was Heaven.

When officers arrived at the Luna address, as the first officer radioed in Heaven being shot, you could hear the panic in the officer's voice, as well as yelling and screaming in the background. An ambulance was immediately called, but it was too late. A short time later, after the girl was taken to Loyola Hospital in Maywood, it was announced that she had died.

Several witnesses on the scene of the shooting told police that an estimated five to eight shots were fired, and two male Blacks were involved. One was in his late teens, nicknamed "JJ", with dreads and a black shirt. He allegedly is a Four Corner Hustler from the North Aveune corridor in that area. The other shooter was allegedly a Four Corner Huslter as well. Police have said that this shooting was gang-related, and is part of a turf war that is on-going in that area.

This shooting occurred on Beat 2532, one of two Beats in the Austin community labeled the "Conflict Zone". In the Conflict Zone, on a daily basis, there are quite a few officers who are assigned to the area and they cannot leave the area whatsoever during their shift, except for lunch. In the Conflict Zone, officers make many, many gang and drug dispersals on a daily basis, and there are gang-related fights and rampant drug sales that occur on a daily basis. The Conflict Zone consists of Beat 2531 as well, and is bordered by Bloomingdale to the north, Laramie to the east, Division to the south and Austin to the west.

Police are investigating this shooting, and Chicago's "top cop" Garry McCarthy announced that they had very good leads from the numerous witnesses involved, which may lead up to an arrest "very soon".
